June 5 - Launch of Clean Up Mataniko River and Commemoration of The Coral Triangle Day 2014, Honiara, Solomon Islands

SOLOMON ISLANDS GALLERY                MAIN CT DAY 2014 GALLERY

On June 5, Solomon Islands launched the “Clean Up Mataniko River” at the National Art Gallery in Honiara to commemorate The Coral Triangle Day as well as World Environment Day and World Oceans Day 2014. The Mataniko River cuts through the city and is highly polluted and filled with rubbish. The campaign aims to clean up and rehabilitate the place. The launch program included a fashion contest, poster competition, recycled products competition, face painting, and awareness talks from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management & Meteorology (MECDM) and the Coral Triangle Program. These activities happened in conjunction with the Youth market, an innovative program by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) allowing youths to participate by selling their art products, food and compete in a band contest that concluded the day. There were about more than 400 people from schools and general public turned up for the day. The day was supported by the MECDM, SPC, Coral Triangle Program and WWF South Pacific.
