Six Priority Fisheries Management Areas Proposed for Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste should prioritize fisheries management areas in six sites along its North Coast to ensure the efficiency of investments in the protection and management of the Lesser Sunda Ecoregion.
This is the key finding from an analysis by Conservation International (CI) contained in a report published recently with the support of the Australian Government.
Timor-Leste Sends Team to Philippines for MPA Field Training
A Timor-Leste contingent recently participated in a hands-on field training session on marine protected areas (MPAs) management held in two coastal towns in the province of Cebu in the Philippines on August 19-28, 2013.
The field training and learning visit was part of Timor-Leste’s Coral Triangle Initiative National Plan of Action on marine protected areas. The Timor-Leste team visited the towns of Argao and Boljoon in Cebu and interacted with local government officials and Philippine experts who conducted most of the field training sessions.
Timor-Leste President Credits CTI with Improving Food Security and Livelihoods
Timor-Leste President Taur Matan Ruak recently credited the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) with improving the lives of coastal communities in his country, enhancing food security, empowering communities in managing their resources, promoting eco-tourism, supporting economic development, and advancing scientific and technological approaches to the study of its marine resources.

Timor-Leste Launches the Nation's First 'No Take Zones
Timor-Leste is located at the heart of the Coral Triangle and holds the highest diversity of marine life in the world. On February 7, 2013, Timor-Leste launched the nation’s first ‘No Take Zones’ (NTZs), where fishing restrictions and other protective measures have been put in place to enable the replenishment of fish stocks and the protection of coral reefs that support local people.

Timor-Leste Develops Financial Strategy for CTI National Plan of Action Implementation
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Knowledge Management for the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Project organized a workshop on March 26 to April 2, 2012 in Dili, Timor-Leste to build the capacity of government, non-government and academic representatives in developing a financial strategy to implement activities in the country's CTI National Plan of Action (NPOA). The financial strategy will include a status report on the level of funding available for NPOA implementation as well as priority actions and the cost needed to implement these on the ground.
