Women Maritime Asia Regional Conference with the theme “Empowering Women in Maritime Bridging the Gap”

About This Event

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and Women in Maritime Association Malaysia (MyWIMA), will deliver a regional conference to support the Women in Maritime Association, Asia (WIMA Asia). This will be the second conference delivered in support of WIMA Asia, since its re-launch under the auspices of IMO in the Philippines in September 2015. 

The conference is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 9 to 11 April 2019. Under the theme Empowering Women in Maritime “Bridging the Gap", the conference will provide support to women managers in the maritime and port sectors of Asia with a view to:

1.       following up on recommendations from the regional WIMA Asia held in Dili, Timor-Leste, from 6 to 10 November 2017;

2.   strengthening WIMA Asia's regional cooperation network that promotes information exchange, training and institutional capabilities in order to make the Association an effective partner of governments, international organizations and maritime stakeholders in addressing maritime-related challenges;

3.       shaping the agenda and focus for WIMA Asia in promoting the further development and viability of the Asian maritime eco-system and the role and contribution of women to the maritime sector;

4.      enhancing national/regional recognition of the role of women in the port and maritime sector of Asia with a view to contributing to the implementation of IMO instruments through regional maritime strategies;

5.       increasing employment opportunities for women in national maritime administrations, port authorities and maritime training institutions;

6.       reaching out to schools and to select communities in Asia with a view to sensitizing women and young girls about careers in the maritime sector; and

7.       exploring career advancement opportunities to promote women in leadership roles.
