EU Ocean Governance Project’s Global Conference

From the 20th to the 22nd of September, the picturesque city of Tarragona, Spain played host to a gathering of global significance—the EU Ocean Governance (OG) project's Global Conference. This event served as a nexus, drawing together over 70 dedicated marine protected area (MPA) managers and esteemed project partners hailing from more than 30 countries, spanning the vast expanses of the Atlantic Ocean, Southeast Asia, and beyond.

One distinguished guest at this gathering was Mr. Christovel RS. Rotinsulu, the Deputy Executive Director for Programme Services of the Regional Secretariat representing the CTI-CFF. In a compelling address, Mr. Rotinsulu shed light on the concerted capacity-building efforts and the spirit of cooperation that permeates Southeast Asia's conservation endeavors.

The conference shone a spotlight on the OG project's pioneering ecosystem restoration initiatives in Southeast Asia. Specifically, the focus was on Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines—areas nestled within the heart of the Coral Triangle. Remarkable strides have been made in rejuvenating coral reefs and nurturing mangroves, resulting in not only the recovery of ecosystems but also a surge in fish populations.

Preceding the conference was the Networks Twinning event—a two-day interlude characterized by lively exchanges and extensive discussions between the networks of the EU Ocean Governance Program. Here, the focal point was the intricate management of Marine Protected Areas. The talks were like a big source of useful information and ideas, that helped participants understand lessons from other parts of the world of how to lead and organize protected areas, how to get maximum benefits, and how to keep track of what's happening.

This sharing of experiences was like a strong proof of how much we can learn when we work together. For CTI-CFF, this event was really important. We got to learn from other experts and also share what we know. It's something we really value. We're excited to keep working hard for a future where our oceans are cared for and healthy.

This meeting bore monumental significance for CTI-CFF and the preservation of marine ecosystems, not only within the Coral Triangle region but reverberating across the global seascape. To culminate this remarkable gathering, a field trip offered a firsthand glimpse into the marvels of the Punta de la Móra - a Marine Protected Area part of the EU Natura 2000 Costal Area in Spain—an apt reminder of the tangible impact of collective action and steadfast dedication.
