German Government Supports Multi-Stakeholder Participation in Savu Sea MPA
The German Government is supporting the 3.5-million hectare Savu Sea Marine National Park (MNP) in East Nusa Tenggara in accordance to the Indonesian government’s commitment to enlarge its marine conservation area to 20 million hectares in 2020 and to help achieve the goals of the Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fishery and Food Sustainability (CTI-CFF). The German Government support is channeled through the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety’s (BMU) International Climate Change Initiative. It has helped facilitate the establishment of the Savu Sea Marine National Park in May 2009 and has been instrumental in facilitating active participation and engagement of all key stakeholders in the management of the marine park - from the national government to the provincial and community levels. This collaboration included the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Regional Government of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Regional Legislative Council of Nusa Tenggara Province, 13 regencies or municipalities and 13 Regional Legislative Council of Regencies, and international non-government organizations (NGOs) such as TNC and WWF. It also included local NGOs, community c organizations, fishery industries, universities and other stakeholders. The project built and supported the capacity of theTim Pengkajian, Penetapan dan Perancangan Pengelolaan Kawasan Konservasi Perairan Laut Sawu (Team for Study, Determination and Management Planning of the Savu Sea MPA), a multi-stakeholders forum established through a provincial government decree to support establishment and management of the marine park.
