Representatives from the CTI-CFF National Coordinating Committees (NCC) gathered on March 14-16, 2012 in Manila, Philippines to participate in a workshop aimed to build capacity in integrating knowledge management (KM) at the organizational and network level and at the same time strengthen coordination among marine conservation projects in the Coral Triangle region.

During the workshop, resource person Dr. Serafin Talisayon, Director for Research and Development of the Center for Conscious Living Foundation said that knowledge management is about managing knowledge assets to perform effective action. “If information is not actionable, then from the perspective of KM it’s not knowledge.”  Apart from learning the concepts of knowledge management, the participants also learned hands-on exercises in using various KM tools such as Google Docs and the Community Platform of the International Waters Learning Exchange and Resource Network (IW:LEARN).  At the end of the workshop, participants agreed to form a community of practice where they can share roadmaps and resources on knowledge management; compile an expertise directory; develop online learning modules on KM, among others.

Lysa Wini, from the Solomon Islands, noted that she will use what she learned from the workshop as inputs for upcoming NCC meetings. “KM ensures organization strategically develop a workable plan, implement and monitor its progress, and learn from experiences encountered and achieve results and outcomes,” she said.  Permana Yudiarso from Indonesia also noted that KM is not just a website development but also a framework for follow-up actions. “We listen and learn from each other [and] then do follow-up actions to achieve KM,” he added.

Representatives from the Sulu-Celebes Sea Sustainable Fisheries Management Project and the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) also attended the workshop which was organized by the ADB Knowledge Management  for the Coral Triangle Initiative Project and GEF/IW:LEARN.  Workshop resources can be downloaded here.
